Hepplewhite Inlaid Mahogany Serpentine Sideboard - Inv. #10154

Hepplewhite Inlaid Mahogany Serpentine Sideboard - Inv. #10154

Very fine hepplewhite inlaid mahogany serpentine sideboard, with figured mahogany top with crossbanded edge and string inlaid upper and lower border, above a conforming case with matchstick inlays above the stiles and one long bowed central drawer above a recessed cabinet section with two doors, flanked by two cabinet doors, all with richly figured crotch mahogany veneers and string inlay with inlaid quarter fans, the stiles with rectangular string inlay and the case with triple string inlaid at the base, and raised on square tapering legs with gothic arched line inlay and inlaid cuffs. Fine original condition, including brasses. New York, circa 1795-1800. Possibly by Elbert Anderson, New York City, by comparison with labeled examples.

With an exaggerated serpentine form emphasized by canted pentagonal front legs, embellished with choice veneers and refined inlays, perfectly proportioned and surviving in original condition, this sideboard stands as a stunning example of New York Federal era craftsmanship. A closely related New York sideboard exhibiting nearly identical inlays and proportions is illustrated in Hennage, American Antiques From Israel Sack Collection, Volume II, page 546.

72 1/2" wide, 29 5/8" deep, 42" high.
